Picking a niche in 48 hours
Founders waste weeks “validating their niche” because they ask vague questions. The 5-question test below cuts that to one weekend.
Question 1: Who specifically?
Not “small business owners” or “founders.” Specifically: “women aged 28-45 launching a beauty brand in the UAE who currently sell on Instagram only.”
The more specific, the easier every other decision gets. Brand, copy, ads, channels — they all derive from this one sentence.
Question 2: What’s their current pain (in their words)?
Hop on 5 calls. Ask: “What’s the most frustrating thing about [your current situation]?” Don’t suggest answers. Write down their exact phrasing.
Their phrasing becomes your headline. Your headline becomes your ad. Your ad becomes your conversions.
Question 3: What are they buying instead today?
If your audience is currently spending money on nothing for this problem, you have a market education problem (slow + expensive). If they’re spending on a competitor or a workaround, you have a competitive problem (faster + cheaper).
Find existing spend. That’s where willingness-to-pay already lives.
Question 4: Can you reach them for under $5?
Test: can you put 1 ad in front of 100 of them for under $5 CPM? If yes, you have a paid acquisition path. If no (audience too small/too expensive on Meta+Google), you need an organic-only strategy.
Question 5: Can you charge $500+ per transaction?
Below $500 average order, paid ads rarely work for service businesses. You’ll burn through margin on customer acquisition cost (CAC). If your product is below $500, you need either subscription pricing or very high lifetime value.
Decision matrix
- 5 yeses → ship the niche, you have a market
- 4 yeses → ship, but find the gap and address it in your offer
- 3 or fewer → don’t ship yet, refine
Spend 1 weekend on this. You’ll save 6 months of “is this the right niche?” anxiety.
